Shakil Ahmed

Dr. Shakil Ahmed was appointed Managing Director at Morgan Stanley in 2001. Born in Dhaka in 1966, he grew up in Austria, attending the Vienna International School until graduation. In 1984, he enrolled for undergraduate studies in Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated with high honors and distinction a semester early in 1987. Shakil spent the next six months in Austria, working for a robotics company, before starting graduate school at Yale University in 1988. He completed M.Phil and M.S. before receiving his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1994 from Yale specializing in parallel processing.

Soon after Dr. Ahmed started working at Morgan Stanley, joining a small group that had ambitions of using mathematical techniques to beat the markets, the business grew at an unprecedented rate and after a number of promotions, he was soon running all the main proprietary trading businesses of the company. As Managing Director, he is responsible for the main proprietary trading businesses of the firm worldwide. He is based at the New York headquarters.
